Hey Everyone, So it’s a pretty big week ahead for us all as US goes to the ballot box this weekend. It’s incredible to see an outsider like Donald Trump in with a chance of the biggest job in the world. We all wish our friends in the US the best - may you choose wisely! It’s also been a big news week in the world of recruiting. Monster / Randstad deal finally gets done. Dice more or less puts itself up for sale. LinkedIn bangs out a new product (salary predictor) whilst quietly withdrawing another (Booleans search on Recruiter Lite) and Indeed continues its invasion into everyone’s market with a launch of another product, this time a crowdsourced referral play. All this and more in this weeks On Hiring, along with the usual content on diversity, decision making, economics and the future of work. It’s On Hiring: recruiting brainfood for the week ahead. Sharing is CaringIf you know someone who might be interested in this type of content please share. Twitter is good, Facebook is better. Thanks in advance for your support.

The most important skills of tomorrow, according to five global leaders
Small sample but note none of them are ‘learn to code’. Human beings need to learn things that machines cannot do better than us - and most of these are related to dealing with other human beings INTERVIEW

Indeed Labs crowd
Indeed going for all the marbles - again. You have to admire how aggressive this company is - going after established markets, attacking entrenched incumbents, all at the same time. Nothing is a moonshot when Indeed is involved. COOL TOOL

Eve
Why can’t you programme in English? Every generation of programming language moves us further away from the machine and closer to how humans actually communicate. Eve, is the latest, most transparent attempt. Here’s the announcement text. RELATED

You can’t fix diversity in tech without fixing the technical interview

Job Interviews Are Useless
Bloomberg’s counterpoint to Lerner. The data shows that interviews don’t predict success, but here’s why we can’t let them go. Overdue analysis on the last of the sacred cows in hiring. As Seth Godin once famously said, it’s a sniff test. MUST READ

Boolean Is Dead. On LinkedIn Only
Boolean search has developed into an industry itself, one in which skilled practitioners can retrieve significantly better results that random amateurs. Is LinkedIn trying to democratise discovery? Or is this the cash machine continuing to grind away? It’s probably a first step away from search, and towards match. Thanks Irina Shaemava - one of the world’s best sourcers - for the spot. The Recruiter Plague: How Recruiters Have Broken Tech Hiring
It’s not unusual to see developers lambast tech recruiters. Eric Elliot’s post will feel familiar to all parties who might read it. What is lacking is a deeper understanding of what promotes ‘bad’ behaviour and what generates 'bad’ experience. Are Tech Agents the way out? Maybe for some, but it will never scale beyond the elite 1% of the market POLEMIC
