So the UK has triggered Article 50 to leave the EU. The phoney Brexit over the past 9 months will now be replaced with the hard reality of extrication from political, economic and legal system we’ve been enmeshed in for the past 40 years. If we didn’t know what the term ‘switching costs’ meant, we’re going to find out all about it now. And we think switching out legacy ATS was hard….
The implications for recruiting / HR for UK and European practitioners will be profound. In this issue of On Hiring, we cover some examples of what is already happening (Pret a Manger hiring 16 year olds to replace migrant labour…) as UK employers scramble to secure talent pipelines in the advent of a shrinking addressable labour pool, whilst employers in EU27 move further ahead with progressive / aggressive hiring strategies to draw in talent that might have previously headed to London and the UK.
All this against the backdrop of accelerating climate change, workforce automation, AI / AR / VR, the rise of the ethno-nationalism and, of course, Donald Trump in the White House and on Twitter. Chinese Premier Xi Jinping flies into Florida this week. It may be the most single important meeting we’re going to see for the future of the global economy.
My friends, we live in interesting times.

Do you know what a custom search engine is? Here’s a great example from our friends at Sourcing Hat. Basically, it’s google search using pre-configured boolean operators. This one, configured to search European profiles. Check it out. COOL TOOL
Are we tired of company scandals yet? This one is worth a read, especially given the overt gender equality mission of the business, Thinx. It’s self-styled ‘She-E.O’, Miki Agarwal turn to be under close scrutiny for unconventional behaviours in the office. D&I
Is child labour the solution to filling jobs immigrants do but natives won’t? Pret a Manger seem to think so. I’d be more supportive of the idea if the work was paid (edit: following public outcry, Pret have confirmed these placements will be compensated) BREXIT
Forecast: The cult of the coder will disappear as soon as we remove the keyboard as the primary source of input. OOP will become AR drag and drop, leading to the de-skilling of the entire industry. Devs are going hate this, but Dreamweaver 2.0 augurs the end! FUTURE OF WORK
More Brexit. We’re going to have to do more of this in the UK, a huge irony, surely not lost on the government of the day. Guide on how to apply for a Tier 2 or 5 sponsor licence and how to sponsor a migrant worker. BREXIT
Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. Hiring for gender diversity? Why not conduct a boolean search on female first names? Here’s a mega .txt file which you can plug into any input field which supports basic boolean operators. H/T to On Hiring subscriber Natalie Glick for the share. SOURCING
